Uni Kuru Toga mechanical pencils and Jetstream pens

Uni comes from the Mitsubishi Pencil Company, founded in 1887. That makes it one of Japan's oldest writing instrument manufacturers. You probably know the consumer brand "Uni-ball" from store shelves. But the company behind it has been perfecting pens for well over a century.

Uni excels in three areas. Mechanical pencil innovation with the Kuru Toga. Hybrid ballpoint ink with the Jetstream. And pigment gel ink with the Signo. They also make the Alpha Gel ergonomic series and some of the finest wooden pencils you'll ever use. I don't think any other brand packs this much mechanical ingenuity into everyday writing tools.

Mechanical Pencils — The Kuru Toga Revolution

Uni Kuru Toga Standard

Uni Kuru Toga — The Self-Sharpening Pencil

The Kuru Toga (rotation drill in Japanese) might be the cleverest mechanical pencil ever designed. Inside the body, a tiny gear mechanism rotates the lead slightly every time you lift the pencil. The result is always sharp, always writing a fine, consistent line. No flat spots. No uneven strokes. You never have to rotate the pencil yourself.

The standard Kuru Toga uses 0.5mm lead and has a clear barrel that shows the rotating mechanism (a fun visual feature). The grip is plastic with a textured section. It's affordable (around $6-8) and available in a rainbow of translucent colors.

Best for: Students, note-takers, and anyone who writes with mechanical pencils and hates uneven lines.

Uni Kuru Toga Advance

Uni Kuru Toga Advance — Faster Rotation

The Advance model doubles the rotation speed. The lead rotates twice per stroke instead of once, giving you an even more consistently sharp tip. It's built for people who write in cursive or write quickly, where the standard Kuru Toga's single rotation might not keep up. The Advance also has a metal grip section for better weight balance.

Available in 0.5mm only. The Advance is a clear upgrade for heavy writers.

Uni Kuru Toga Advance Metal

Uni Kuru Toga Advance Metal — Premium Build

The Advance Metal is the top-of-the-line Kuru Toga. Full aluminum body with a knurled metal grip. It feels substantial and premium. The mechanism is the same fast-rotation Advance engine, but the heavier body changes the writing experience. The weight helps you write with less pressure, reducing hand fatigue. I think the Advance Metal is the best mechanical pencil you can get under $30.

Uni Kuru Toga Roulette

Uni Kuru Toga Roulette — Classic Metal Grip

The Roulette was the first premium Kuru Toga model, before the Advance Metal came along. It has the standard rotation mechanism (single rotation per stroke) but features a knurled metal grip and a sleek black barrel with brass accents. Still a fantastic pencil. That knurled grip is one of the best in the business.

Ballpoint Pens — The Jetstream Advantage

Uni Jetstream Standard & Prime

Uni Jetstream — Hybrid Ink Perfection

The Jetstream is the ballpoint pen that feels like a gel pen. Uni's hybrid ink technology combines the quick-drying permanence of ballpoint ink with the smooth, dark writing of gel ink. It's genuinely the best of both worlds. The Jetstream writes smoothly without skipping, dries instantly without smearing, and the ink is waterproof and archival.

The standard Jetstream comes in 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0mm tips, with black, blue, red, and dark blue ink options. The Jetstream Prime is a premium metal-body version with a knurled grip section and a satisfying click mechanism. The Jetstream 101 is the budget-friendly version (under $2) that still delivers the same great ink.

Best for: Lefties (no smearing!), quick note-taking, and anyone who hates gel pen smudges.

Uni Jetstream 4+1 Multi-Pen

Uni Jetstream 4+1 — The Ultimate Multi-Pen

The 4+1 is a legend among multi-pens. It packs four ink colors (black, blue, red, green) plus a 0.5mm mechanical pencil into a single pen body. Each mechanism clicks independently, and the ink is the same excellent Jetstream hybrid formula. The body has a comfortable rubber grip and the clip rotates to prevent pocket wear. If you need multiple colors on the job, the 4+1 is indispensable.

Gel Pens — The Signo Legacy

Uni-ball Signo Gel Pen (UM-151 / UM-100)

Uni-ball Signo — Pigment Gel Ink Pioneer

The Signo was one of the first gel pens to use pigment-based ink instead of dye-based. Pigment ink holds up better against water, UV light, and age. The Signo UM-151 (the Signo DX) is the enthusiast favorite. It has a 0.38mm needle-point tip that produces an incredibly crisp line with no skipping. The Signo UM-100 is the standard retractable version you'll find everywhere.

The Signo line covers tip sizes from 0.28mm (ultra-fine) to 1.0mm (bold), with over 20 ink colors. The 0.38mm Signo DX in black is one of the most recommended pens in the entire stationery community.

Uni-ball Signo 207

Uni-ball Signo 207 — The Anti-Fraud Pen

The Signo 207 uses Uni's Super Ink, a pigment gel formula that's chemically trapped in the paper fibers. That makes it extremely hard to alter or remove with solvents. It's the recommended pen for checks, legal documents, and anything where security matters. Bonus: it also writes beautifully. Smooth, dark, and consistent.

Alpha Gel — Ergonomic Comfort

Uni Alpha Gel Mechanical Pencil & Pen

Uni Alpha Gel — The Softest Grip in Stationery

Uni's Alpha Gel is a special silicone gel material that compresses under pressure and molds to your fingers for a custom grip. It's ridiculously comfortable. Like writing with a memory foam grip. The Alpha Gel comes in both mechanical pencil (0.5mm, with Kuru Toga mechanism built-in on some models) and ballpoint pen (Jetstream refill) versions.

The Alpha Gel Switch model lets you switch between the Kuru Toga twist and a stationary mode. The Alpha Gel Slim is a thinner version for those who prefer less bulk. If you write for extended periods, the Alpha Gel can dramatically reduce hand fatigue.

Other Notable Uni Products

Uni-ball One Gel Pen

Uni-ball One — The "Darkest Ink" Gel Pen

The Uni-ball One uses a proprietary black pigment that Uni claims is the darkest ink of any gel pen. And honestly, it lives up to the hype. The black is startlingly deep and rich. The pen body is hexagonal with a minimalist design, and it comes in 0.38 and 0.5mm tips. The One is a relative newcomer but it's already developed a cult following.
