Hobonichi Techo Original (A6) Review — Japan's Iconic Daily Planner

The Hobonichi Techo Original is more than a planner. It's become a whole thing in the stationery world. Since 2005, this A6 daily planner has built a devoted following internationally. At the center of it is the Tomoe River paper. It's thin, strong, and handles fountain pens better than paper has any right to. I wanted to see if it lives up to the reputation after using one daily for the past year.

What Makes the Hobonichi Techo Special?

Hobonichi is short for "Hobo Nikki," which means "almost daily diary." The Techo Original works on a simple idea: one page per day, for every day of the year. Each page has a daily spread with an hourly timeline, a to-do section, and plenty of free space for journaling, doodling, or sticking things in.

The A6 size is 105 by 148 mm. I found it small enough to carry around but large enough to write a proper daily entry. About the size of a paperback book. Fits in a purse or bag pocket easily.

Key Features

• Tomoe River Paper (52 gsm): Ultra-thin but remarkably strong. It's translucent enough to see the grid through the page, but it can handle fountain pens, brush pens, and even light watercolor without bleeding. The coating also brings out shading in fountain pen inks nicely.
• Daily Page Layout: Each day has a full page with a vertical timeline from 6 AM to midnight, a to-do list, and a "Today's Dinner" section that people often repurpose for mood tracking.
• Yearly, Monthly & Weekly Indexes: The front has a year-at-a-glance, monthly calendars, and a graph paper section for notes.
• Quotes in Japanese & English: Each daily page opens with a quote from Japanese and international authors. A small touch, but I look forward to it.
• Thin & Lightweight: Over 365 pages, yet the book is only about 10 mm thick. That's the Tomoe River paper working its magic.
• Lay-Flat Binding: Opens completely flat. Makes it comfortable to write in anywhere.

Pros

Cons

• Tomoe River paper is thin — some ghosting is normal, you just get used to it
• Small format — A6 may feel cramped if you write big or need more room
• Expensive for a planner — at $28+ for just the book, it's an investment
• Cover sold separately — the cover ecosystem is part of the appeal but adds cost
• Drying time — very wet fountain pens can take a moment to dry on the coated paper

Who Is the Hobonichi Techo Original Best For?

In my experience, the Techo Original works well for daily journalers who want structure without rigidity. It's good for:

• Bullet journalers who prefer a guided layout over a blank notebook
• Anyone who enjoys daily reflection and wants a portable companion
• Stationery collectors who like the custom cover ecosystem
• People who write small — the A6 grid squares (3.7 mm) are tighter than standard
