Uni Kuru Toga Mechanical Pencil Review — The Pencil That Thinks for You

The Uni Kuru Toga is one of the most clever mechanical pencils I have used. Its trick is a simple internal mechanism that rotates the lead as you write, keeping the tip consistently sharp. The line stays uniform. No flat spots. Once I tried it, going back to a regular mechanical pencil felt like a downgrade.

How the Kuru Toga Mechanism Works

With a standard mechanical pencil, the lead wears down unevenly and creates a chisel-shaped flat spot. The line gets wider as you write until you rotate the pencil or click for more lead. The Kuru Toga fixes this with a gear system inside the barrel. Each time you lift the pencil off the page, a spring-loaded mechanism rotates the lead by a precise amount. After about 40 lifts (a couple of sentences), the lead makes a full rotation.

The result is consistent, sharp lines without ever twisting the pencil in your hand. It works. I tested it side by side with a regular pencil and the difference is real.

Three Models: Standard vs Advance vs Roulette

Kuru Toga Standard ($5–$8)

The entry-level model. Transparent plastic barrel, basic rubber grip, and the original rotation mechanism. It works, but I found the grip can get slippery after a while, and the plastic body feels lightweight. Available in 0.5 mm lead only.

Kuru Toga Advance ($8–$12)

A solid upgrade. The mechanism rotates twice as fast, so you get a sharp tip after about 20 lifts instead of 40. The pipe slide tip extends the guide pipe to protect the lead at steeper angles. The grip is textured rubber that stays grippy. Available in 0.5 mm.

Kuru Toga Roulette ($12–$18)

The premium choice. Full metal body with a knurled grip section. No rubber, just textured metal that provides excellent traction. It has the same rotation speed as the Standard, but the all-metal construction gives it a satisfying weight and durability. Available in 0.5 mm.

Pros

Cons

• Lead size limited to 0.5 mm — no 0.3 mm, 0.7 mm, or 0.9 mm options
• Mechanism can be felt while writing — the rotation creates a faint click that some may find distracting
• Standard model feels cheap — plastic body and basic grip are not great
• Not ideal for continuous writing without lifts — the mechanism relies on lifting the pencil, so cursive writing slows rotation
• Roulette's knurling may be too aggressive — some may find it uncomfortable for very long sessions
