Uni-ball Signo Gel Pen Review — The Gold Standard of Gel Ink

When Mitsubishi Pencil Company (that is Uni-ball) introduced the Signo gel pen line, they changed what gel ink could do. The Signo series, especially the DX (UM-151) and the broad UM-153, is considered by many enthusiasts to be the finest gel pen lineup out there. I wanted to put that claim to the test.

Signo Models

Uni-ball Signo DX (UM-151)

"DX" stands for deluxe. And this is the pen Signo fans obsess over. Available in 0.28 mm, 0.38 mm, and 0.5 mm. The 0.28 mm is the finest line you will find in a gel pen. It writes with the precision of a technical pen but with the smoothness of gel ink. In my experience, the 0.38 mm is the sweet spot for most people.

Uni-ball Signo 151 (UM-151)

Same pen as the DX with slightly different packaging. In some markets, "Signo DX" means the 0.38 mm and 0.5 mm versions, while "Signo 151" refers to the 0.28 mm. Functionally, they are identical. Same great ink, same needle-point tip, same quality.

Uni-ball Signo UM-153 (Broad)

The UM-153 is the bold one. With a 1.0 mm tip, it lays down a thick, juicy line. I found it great for addressing envelopes, writing large text, and gel pen art. The ink is the same pigment-based archival formula, so your bold writing lasts just as long as your fine writing.

• Ink dries slower than Energel — left-handers may get some smudging
• No retractable mechanism — the DX has a cap, not a click-retract
